Eightfold Path in Hindi - अष्टांगिक-मार्ग भगवान बुद्ध उनका और धम्म
1) सारनाथ आगमन
1. धम्मोपदेश का निश्चय कर चुकने के अनंतर बुद्ध ने अपने आप से प्रश्न किया कि मैं सर्वप्रथम किसे धम्मोपदेश दूं? उन्होंने सब से पहले आलार-काळाम का ख्याल आया जो बुद्ध की सम्मति में विद्वान था, बुद्धिमान था, समझदार था और काफी निर्मल था। बुद्ध ने सोचा यह कैसा हो, यदि मैं सर्वप्रथम उसे ही धम्मोपदेश करूं? लेकिन बुद्ध को पता लगा की आलार काळाम की मृत्यु हो चुकी है।
2. तब उन्होंने उद्दक रामपुत्त को भी उपदेश देने का विचार किया। किंतु उसका भी शरीरान्त हो चुका था।
3. तब उन्होंने अपने उन पांच साथियों का ध्यान आया जो निरञ्जना नदी के तट पर उनकी सेवा में थे, और जो सिद्धार्थ गौतम के तपस्या और काय-क्लेश का पथ त्याग देने पर असंतुष्ट हो उन्हें छोड़कर चले गए थे।
4. उन्होंने सोचा उन्होंने मेरे लिए बहुत किया, मेरी बड़ी सेवा की, मेरे लिए बहुत कष्ट उठाया। कैसा हो यदि मैं उन्हें ही सर्वप्रथम धम्म का उपदेश दूं।
5. उन्होंने उनके ठौर-ठिकाने का पता लगाया। जब उन्हें पता लगा कि वे वाराणसी (सारनाथ) के इसिपतन के मृगदाय में रहते हैं, तो बुद्ध उधर ही चल दिए।
6. उन पांचों ने जब बुद्ध को आते देखा तो आपस में तै किया कि बुद्ध का स्वागत नहीं करेंगे। उनमें से एक बोला, मित्रों, वह श्रमण गौतम चला रहा है, जो पथ-भ्रष्ट हो गया है, जिसने तपस्या का मार्ग त्याग आराम-तलबी और कामभोग का पंथ अपना लिया हैं। वह पापी हैं। इसलिए हमें न उसका स्वागत करना चाहिए न उसके सम्मान में उठ खड़े होना चाहिए। न उसका पात्र और चीवर ग्रहण करना चाहिए। हम उसके लिए एक आसन रख देते हैं, इच्छा होगी तो उस पर बैठ जाएगा। वे सब सहमत थे।
7. लेकिन जब बुद्ध समय पहुंचे तो वह पांचो परिव्राजक अपने संकल्प पर दृढ़ न रह सके। बुद्ध के व्यक्तित्व ने उन्हें इतना प्रभावित किया कि वे सभी अपने आसन से उठ खड़े हुए। एक ने बुद्ध का पात्र लिया, एक ने चीवर संभाला, एक आसन बिछाया और दूसरा पांव धोने के लिए पानी ले आया।
8. यह सचमुच एक अप्रिय-अतिथि का असाधारण स्वागत था।
9. इस प्रकार जो उपेक्षावान थे, श्रद्धावान बन गए।
2) धम्मचक्र प्रवर्तन
1. कुशल प्रेम की बातचीत हो चुकने के बाद परिव्राजकों ने बुद्ध से प्रश्न किया- क्या आप अब भी तपश्चर्या तथा काय-क्लेश में विश्वास रखते हैं? बुद्ध का उत्तर नकारात्मक था।
2. बुद्ध ने कहा- दो सिरे की बातें हैं, दोनों किनारों की- एक तो कामभोग का जीवन और दूसरा काय-क्लेश का जीवन।
3. एक का कहना हैं, खाओं पियो मौज उड़ाओ क्योंकि कल तो मरना ही है। दूसरे का कहना है तमाम वासनाओं का मूलोच्छेद कर दो क्योंकि वे पुनर्जन्म का कारण हैं। उन्होंने दोनों को आदमी की शान के योग्य नहीं माना।
4. वे मध्यम-मार्ग को मानने वाले थे-- बीच का मार्ग; जो कि न तो कामभोग का मार्ग है और न काय-क्लेश का मार्ग है।
5. बुद्ध ने परिव्राजकों से प्रश्न किया- मेरे इस प्रश्न का उत्तर दो कि जब तक किसी के मन में पार्थिव वा स्वर्गीय भोगों की कामना बनी रहेगी, तब तक उसका क्या उसका समस्त काय-क्लेश व्यर्थ नहीं होगा? उनका उत्तर था- जैसा आप कहते हैं वैसा ही है।
6. यदि आप काय-क्लेश द्वारा काम-तृष्णा को शांत नहीं कर सकते हैं तो काय क्लेश का दरिद्री जीवन बिताने से आप अपने आप को कैसे जीत सकते हैं? उनका उत्तर था- जैसा आप कहते हैं वैसा ही है?
7. जब आप अपने आप पर विजय पा लेंगे तभी आप काम-तृष्णा से मुक्त होंगे, तब आपको काम भोग की कामना न रहेगी, और तब प्राकृतिक इच्छाओं की पूर्ति विकार पैदा नहीं करेगी। आप अपनी शारीरिक आवश्यकताओं के हिसाब से खाना-पीना ग्रहण करें।
8. सभी तरह की कामवासना उत्तेजित होते हैं। कामुक अपनी कामवासना का गुलाम होता है। सभी काम भोगों के चक्कर में पड़े रहना गंवारपन और नीच कर्म हैं। लेकिन मैं तुम्हें कहता हूं कि शरीर की स्वाभाविक आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति में बुराई नहीं हैं। शरीर को स्वस्थ बनाए न रख सकोगे और प्रज्ञा रुपी प्रदीप भी प्रज्वलित न रह सकेगा।
9. हे परिव्राजकों इस बात को समझ लो कि आदमी को इन दोनों अन्त की बातों से सदा बचना चाहिए- एक तो उन चीजों के चक्कर में पड़े रहने से जिनका आकर्षण काम-भोग संबंधी तृष्णा पर निर्भर करता हैं- यह एक बहुत निम्न कोटि की बात है; अयोग्य है, हानि कर है तथा दूसरी ओर तपश्चर्या अथवा काय-क्लेश से, क्योंकि वह भी कष्टप्रद है, अयोग्य है तथा हानिकार है।
10. इन दोनों अन्तों से, इन दोनों सिरे की बातों के बीच में एक मध्यम मार्ग है- बीच का रास्ता। यह समझ लो कि मैं उसी मध्यम मार्ग का उपदेष्टा हूं।
11. पांचो परिव्राजकों ने उनकी बात ध्यान से सुनी। वे यह नहीं जानते थे कि बुद्ध के मध्यम मार्ग के बारे में क्या कहें। इसलिए उन्होंने प्रश्न किया--जब हम आपका साथ छोड़ कर चले आए, उसके बाद से आप कहां कहां रहे क्या-क्या किया? तब बुद्ध ने उन्हें बताया कि किस प्रकार गया पहुंचे कैसे उस पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे ध्यान लगाकर बैठे और कैसे 4 सप्ताह की निरंतर समाधि के बाद उन्हें वह नया बोध प्राप्त हुआ जिससे वह नये मार्ग का आविष्कार कर सकें।
11. यह सुना तो परिव्राजक उस नये मार्ग को विस्तार पूर्वक जानने के लिए अत्यंत उत्सुक हो उठे। उन्होंने बुद्ध से प्रार्थना की कि वे उन्हें बताएं।
12. बुद्ध ने स्वीकार किया।
13. बुद्ध ने पहली बात यह बताई कि उन्हें सद्धर्म को मरने के बाद (आत्मा का) क्या होता हैं इससे कुछ सरोकार नहीं हैं। उनके सद्धर्म को कर्मकाण्ड़ के क्रियाकलापों से भी कुछ लेना देना नहीं।
14. बुद्ध के धम्म का केंद्र बिंदु है आदमी और इस पृथ्वी पर रहते समय आदमी का आदमी के प्रति क्या कर्तव्य होना चाहिए?
15. बुद्ध ने कहा, यह उनकी पहली स्थापना है।
16. उनकी दूसरी स्थापना है कि आदमी दुःखी हैं, कष्ट में है और दरिद्रता का जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे हैं। संसार दुःख से भरा पड़ा है और धम्म का उद्देश्य इस दुःख का नाश करना ही हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त सद्धर्म और कुछ नहीं है।
17. दुःख के अस्तित्व की स्वीकृति और दुःख के नाश करने का उपाय यही धम्म की आधारशिला है।
18. धम्म के लिए एकमात्र यही आधार हो सकता हैं। जो धर्म इस प्राथमिक बात को भी अंगीकारी नहीं कर सकता,धम्म ही नहीं हैं।
19. हे परिव्राजको! जो भी श्रमण या ब्राह्मण (धर्मोपदेष्टा) यह भी नहीं समझ पाते कि संसार में दुःख है और उस दुःख के नाश का उपाय हैं। ऐसे श्रमण ब्राह्मण मेरी सम्मति में श्रमण ब्राह्मण ही नहीं हैं, न वे अपने को ज्येष्ठ-श्रेष्ठ समझने वाले इतना भी समझ पाए हैं कि धम्म का सही अर्थ क्या हैं?
20. तब परिव्राजकों ने पूछा: दुःख और दुःख का विनाश ही यदि आपके धम्म की आधारशिला हैं तो हमें बताएं कि आप का धम्म कैसे दुःख का नाश कर सकता हैं?
21. तब हम बुद्ध ने उन्हें समझाया के उनके धम्म के अनुसार यदि हर आदमी
1) पवित्रता के पथ पर चले,
2) धम्म के पथ पर चले,
3) शीलमार्ग पर चले तो इस दुःख का एकांन्तिक विरोध हो सकता हैं।
22. और उन्होंने कहा कि उन्होंने ऐसे धम्म का आविष्कार कर लिया है
3) धम्मचक्र प्रवर्तन Eightfold Path in Hindi
1. परिव्राजकों ने तब बुद्ध से अपने धम्म की व्याख्या करने की प्रार्थना की।
2. बुद्ध ने कृपया इसे स्वीकार किया।
3. उन्होंने सबसे पहले उन्हें पवित्रता का पथ ही समझाया।
4. उन्होंने परिव्राजकों से कहा कोई भी आदमी जो अच्छा बनना चाहता है उसके लिए आवश्यक है कि वह कोई अच्छाई का माप-दण्ड़ स्वीकार करें।
5. मेरे पवित्रता के पथ के अनुसार अच्छे जीवन के 5 मापदण्ड़ हैं-
1) किसी प्राणी की हिंसा न करना
2) चोरी न करना अर्थात दूसरे की चीज को अपने न बना लेना
3) व्यभिचार न करना
4) असत्य न बोलना
5) नशीली चीजों का ग्रहण न करना।
6. मैं कहता हूं कि हर आदमी के लिए यह परमावश्यक है कि वह इन पांच शीलों को स्वीकार करें। क्योंकि हर आदमी के लिए जीवन का कोई मापदंड होना चाहिए, जिससे वह अपनी अच्छाई-बुराई मापने के मापदंड ही है।
7. दुनिया में हर जगह पतित (गिरे हुए) लोग होते ही हैं। लेकिन पतित दो तरह के होते हैं; एक तो पतित वे होते हैं जिनके जीवन का कोई मापदंड होता है, दूसरे पतित वे होते हैं जिनके जीवन का कोई मापदंड नहीं होता।
8. जिसके जीवन का कोई मापदंड नहीं होता वह पतित होने पर भी यह नहीं जानता कि वह 'पतित' है, इसलिए वह हमेशा पतित ही रहता है, दूसरी ओर जिसके जीवन का कोई मापदंड होता है वह हमेशा इस बात की कोशिश करता रहता है कि पतितावस्था से ऊपर उठे। क्यों? इसका उत्तर यहीं है कि वह जानता हैं कि वह पतित है, गिर गया हैं।
9. आदमी के लिए जीवन सुधार का कोई मापदंड होने और न होने में बड़ा अंतर है। आदमी अपने स्तर से नीचे गिर पड़े यह इतनी बड़ी बात नहीं हैं जितनी की यह कि, आदमी के जीवन का कोई स्तर ही न हो।
10. हे परिव्राजकों! तुम पूछ सकते हो कि इन 5 शीलों को जीवन का मापदंड ही क्यों स्वीकार किया जाए?
11. इस प्रश्न का उत्तर तुम्हें स्वयं ही मिल जाएगा यदि तुम अपने से ही यह प्रश्न पूछो- क्या यह शील व्यक्ति के लिए कल्याणकारी हैं? और साथ ही यह भी पूछों, क्या इन शीलों का पालन करना समाज के लिए कल्याणकारी हैं?
12. यदि इन दोनों प्रश्नों का तुम्हारा उत्तर स्वीकारात्मक है तो इससे यह सीधा परिमाण निकलता है कि मेरे पवित्रता के पथ के ये पांच शील इस योग्य है कि उन्हें जीवन का सच्चा मापदंड मान लिया जाए।
4) धम्मचक्र प्रवर्तन
1. इसके आगे बुद्ध ने उन परिव्राजकों को (अष्टांगिक मार्ग) Eightfold Path का उपदेश दिया। बुद्ध ने कहा- इस मार्ग के आठ अंग हैं।
2. बुद्ध ने सर्वप्रथम सम्मा दिट्टि (=सम्यक दृष्टि) की व्याख्या की जो अष्टांगिक मार्ग में प्रथम और प्रधान हैं।
3. सम्यक दृष्टि का महत्व समझाने के लिए बुद्ध ने परिव्राजकों से कहा -
4. हे परिव्राजको ! तुम्हें इसका बोध होना चाहिए कि यह संसार एक कारागार है और आदमी इस कारागार में एक कैदी है।
5. इस कारागार में इतना अधिक अंधकार है कि यहां कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं देता। कैदी को यहा तक दिखाई नहीं देता कि वह कैदी है।
6. इतना ही नहीं की बहुत अधिक समय तक इस अंधेरी कोठरी में ही पड़े रहने के कारण आदमी एकदम अंधा हो गया हो, बल्कि उसे इस बात में भी बड़ा संदेह हो गया है कि प्रकाश नाम की कोई चीज भी कभी कहीं हो सकती है?
7. मन ही एक ऐसा साधन है जिसके माध्यम से आदमी को प्रकाश की प्राप्ति हो सकती है।
8. लेकिन इन कारागार-वासियों के दिमाग की अवस्था ऐसी नहीं है कि यह उद्देश्य पूरा हो सके।
9. इनका दिमाग जरा सा प्रकाश मात्र आने देती है इतना ही है कि जिनके पास आंख है वह देख सके कि अंधकार नाम की भी कोई वस्तु हैं।
10. इसलिए ऐसी समझ बड़ी सदोष है।
11. लेकिन हे परिव्राजकों ! कैदी की स्थिति ऐसी निराशाजनक नहीं है जैसे यह प्रतीत होती है।
12. क्योंकि आदमी में एक बल है, एक शक्ति है, जिसे संकल्प बल वा इच्छाशक्ति कहा जाता हैं। जब आदमी के सम्मुख कोई उपर्युक्त आदर्श उपस्थित होता है तो इस इच्छा-शक्ति को जागृत और क्रियाशील बनाया जा सकता हैं।
13. आदमी को यदि कहीं से इतना भी प्रकाश मिल जाए कि वह यह देख सके कि उसे अपनी इच्छाशक्ति का ऐसा संचालन कर सकता है कि वह अंत में उसे बंधन मुक्त कर दें।
14. इसलिए यद्यपि आदमी बंधन में है तो भी वह स्वतंत्र हो सकता है; वह किसी भी समय ऐसा पहला कदम उठा सकता है कि एक न एक दिन वह स्वतंत्र होकर रहे।
15. यह इसलिए कि हम जिस किसी दिशा में भी अपने मन को ले जाना चाहे, हम उसे उस दिशा में ले जा सकते हैं। मन ही है जो हमें जीवन रूपी कारागार का कैदी बनाता है और यह मन ही है जो हमें कैदी बनाए रखता है।
16. लेकिन मन ने ही जिसे बनाया है मन ही उसे नष्ट भी कर सकता है, मन अपनी कृति को मटियामेट भी कर सकता है। यदि इस ने आदमी को बंधन में बाधा है तो ठीक दिशा में अग्रसर होने पर यही आदमी को बंधन मुक्त कर सकता हैं।
17. यह है जो सम्यक दृष्टि कर सकते हैं।
18. तब परिव्राजकों ने प्रश्न किया- सम्यक-दृष्टि का अंतिम उद्देश्य क्या हैं? बुद्ध ने उत्तर दिया- अविद्या का विनाश ही सम्यक-दृष्टि का उद्देश्य हैं। यह मिथ्या-दृष्टि की विरोधिनी है।
19. और अविद्या का अर्थ है कि आदमी दुःख को न जान सके, आदमी दुःख के निरोध के उपाय को न जान सके- आदमी इन आर्य-सत्यों को न जान सके।
20. सम्यक-दृष्टि का मतलब है कि आदमी कर्मकाण्ड़ के क्रियाकलाप को व्यर्थ समझे, आदमी शास्त्रों की पवित्रता की मिथ्या-धारणा से मुक्त हो।
21. सम्यक-दृष्टि का मतलब है कि आदमी मिथ्या-विश्वास से मुक्त हो, आदमी यह न समझता रहे कि कोई भी बात प्रकृति के नियमों के विरुद्ध घट सकती हैं।
22. सम्यक-दृष्टि का मतलब है कि आदमी ऐसी सब मिथ्या-धारणाओं से मुक्त हो आदमी के मन की कल्पना-मात्र है और जिनका आदमी के अनुभव या यथार्थता से किसी प्रकार का संबंध नहीं।
23. सम्यक-दृष्टि का मतलब है कि आदमी का मन स्वतंत्र हो, आदमी के विचार स्वतंत्र हों।
24. हर आदमी के कुछ आशायें होती हैं, आकांक्षायें होती हैं, महत्वकांक्षायें होती हैं। सम्यक संकल्प का मतलब है कि हमारी आशायें हमारी आकांक्षाएं ऊंचे स्तर की हो, निम्नस्तर के न हों, हमारे योग्य हों, अयोग्य न हों।
25. सम्यक वाणी का मतलब है कि आदमी
1)सत्य ही बोले,
2)आदमी असत्य न बोले,
3)आदमी दूसरों की बुराई न करता फिरें, 4)आदमी दूसरों के बारे में झूठी बातें न फैलाता फिरे,
5)आदमी किसी के प्रति गाली-गलौज का वा कठोर वचनों का व्यवहार न करें,
6)आदमी सभी के साथ विनम्र वाणी का व्यवहार करें,
7)आदमी व्यर्थ की, बेमतलब मूर्खतापूर्ण बातें न करता रहे, बल्कि उसकी वाणी बुद्धिसंगत हो, सार्थक हो और सोद्देश्य हों।
26. जैसा मैंने समझाया सम्यक-वाणी का व्यवहार न किसी के भय की अपेक्षा रखता हैं, और न किसी के पक्षपात की। इसका इससे कुछ भी संबंध नहीं होना चाहिए कि कोई 'बड़ा आदमी' उसके बारे में क्या सोचने लगेगा अथवा सम्यक-वाणी के व्यवहार से उसकी क्या हानि हो सकती है।
27. सम्यक-वाणी का माप-दण्ड़ न किसी ऊपर के आदमी की आज्ञा है, और न किसी व्यक्ति को हो सकने वाला व्यक्तिगत लाभ।
28. सम्यक-कर्मान्त योग्य व्यवहार की शिक्षा देता हैं। हमारा हर कार्य है ऐसा हो जिसके करते समय हम दूसरों की भावनाओं और अधिकारों का ख्याल रखें।
29. सम्यक-कर्मान्त का माप-दण्ड़ क्या है! सम्यक कर्मान्त का माप-दण्ड़ यही है कि हमारा कार्य जीवन के जो मुख्य नियम हैं उनसे अधिक से अधिक समन्वय रखता हो।
30. जब किसी आदमी के कार्य इन नियमों के समन्वय रखते हों, तो उन्हें हम सम्यक-कर्म कह सकते हैं।
31. प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को अपनी जीविका कमानी ही होती हैं। लेकिन जीविका कमाने के ढ़ंगो और ढ़ंगो में अंतर हैं। कुछ बुरे हैं, कुछ भले हैं। बुरे ढंग वे हैं जिनमें किसी की हानि होती हैं अथवा किसी के प्रति अन्याय होता हैं। अच्छे ढंग वे हैं जिनमें आदमी बिना किसी को हानि पहुंचाये अथवा बिना किसी के साथ अन्याय किये अपनी जीविका कमा सकता हैं। यही सम्यक-आजीविका है।
32. सम्यक-व्यायाम; अविद्या को नष्ट करने के प्रयास की प्रथम सिढ़ी हैं, इस दु:खद कारागार के द्वार तक पहुंचने का रास्ता ताकि उसे खोला जा सकें।
33. सम्यक-व्यायाम के चार उद्देश्य हैं।
34. एक है अष्टांगिक-मार्ग विरोधी चित्त-प्रवृत्तियों की उत्पत्ति को रोकना।
35. दूसरा हैं ऐसे चित्त-प्रवृत्तियों को दबाना जो उत्पन्न हो गई हो।
36. तीसरा हैं ऐसे चित्त-प्रवृत्तियों को उत्पन्न करना जो अष्टांगिक मार्ग की आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति में सहायक हों।
37. चौथा है ऐसी उत्पन्न चित्त-प्रवृत्तियों में और भी अधिक वृद्धि करना तथा उनका विकास करना।
38. सम्यक स्मृति का मतलब है हर बात पर ध्यान दे सकना। यह मन की सतत जागरूकता है। मन में जो अकुशल विचार उठते हैं, उनकी चौकीदारी करना सम्यक-स्मृति का ही एक दूसरा नाम हैं।
39. हे परिव्राजकों ! जो आदमी सम्यक दृष्टि, सम्यक संकल्प, सम्यक वाणी, सम्यक कर्मान्त, सम्यक आजीविका, सम्यक व्यायाम, और सम्यक् स्मृति को प्राप्त करना चाहता हैं, उसके मार्ग में 5 बाधाएं या बंधन आतें हैं।
40. ये हैं लाभ, द्वेष, आलस्य, विचिकित्सा तथा अनिश्चिय इन बाधाओं को जो वास्तव में कडे़ बंधन ही हैं जीत लेना या तोड़ना आवश्यक हैं। इन बंधनों से मुक्त होने का उपाय समाधि हैं। लेकिन परिव्राजकों ! यह समझ लेना चाहिए कि समाधि और 'सम्यक समाधि' एक ही बात नहीं। दोनों में बड़ा अंतर हैं।
41. समाधि का मतलब है केवल चित्त की एकाग्रता। इसमें संदेह नहीं है कि इससे वैसे ध्यानों को प्राप्त किया जा सकता हैं कि जिनके रहते ये पांचों संयोजन या बंधन स्थगित रहते हैं।
42. लेकिन ध्यान की ये अवस्थायें अस्थायी हैं। इसलिए संयोजन में या बंधन भी अस्थायी तौर पर ही स्थगित रहते हैं। आवश्यकता है चित्त में स्थायी परिवर्तन लाने की। इस प्रकार का स्थायी-परिवर्तन सम्यक समाधि के द्वारा ही लाया जा सकता हैं।
43. खाली समाधि का एक नकारात्मक स्थिति हैं, क्योंकि यह इतना ही तो करती है कि संयोजनों को अस्थायी तौर पर स्थगित रखें। इसमें मन का स्थायी परिवर्तन निहित नहीं है। सम्यक समाधि एक भावत्मक वस्तु हैं। यह मन को कुशल-कर्मों का एकाग्रता के साथ चिंतन करने का अभ्यास डालती है और इस प्रकार मन क संयोजनोत्पन्न अकुशल-कर्मों की ओर आकर्षित होने की प्रवृत्ति को ही समाप्त कर देते हैं।
43. सम्यक समाधि मन को कुशल और हमेशा कुशल ही कुशल (भलाई ही भलाई) सोचने की आदत डा़ल देती हैं। सम्यक समाधि मन को वह अपेक्षित शक्ति देती हैं, जिससे आदमी कल्यारत रह सकें।
5) धम्मचक्र प्रवर्तन - शील का मार्ग
1. तद्नन्तर बुद्ध ने उन परिव्राजकों को शील का पथ वा सद्गुणों का मार्ग समझाया।
2. उन्होंने उन्हें बताया कि शील के पथ का पथिक होने का मतलब है इन सद्गुणों का अभ्यास करना 1.शील, 2.दान 3.उपेक्षा 4.नैष्क्रम्य 5.वीर्य 6.शांति 7.सत्य 8.अधिष्ठान 9.करुणा और 10.मैत्री।
3. उन परिव्राजकों ने बुद्ध से इन सद्गुणों का यथार्थ अर्थ समझना चाहा।
4. तब बुद्ध ने उनकी शंका मिटा कर उन्हें संतुष्ट करने के लिए कहा-
5. शील का मतलब है नैतिकता, अकुशल न करने की प्रवृत्ति और कुशल करने की प्रवृत्ति; बुराई करने में लज्जा-भय मानना। लज्जा भय के कारण पाप से बचे रहने का प्रयास करना शील है। शील का मतलब है पापभीरुता।
6.नैष्क्रम्य का मतलब है सांसारिक काम-भोगों का त्याग।
7. दान का मतलब है बदले में किसी भी प्रकार के स्वार्थ-पूर्ति की आशा के बिना दूसरों की भलाई में निमित्त अपनी संपत्ति का ही नहीं, अपने रक्त, अपने शरीर के अंगों और यहां तक कि अपने प्राणों तक का बलिदान कर देना।
8. वीर्य का मतलब है सम्यक प्रयत्न। जो कुछ एक बार करने का निश्चय कर लिया अथवा जो कुछ करने का संकल्प कर लिया उसे अपनी पूरी सामर्थ्य से करने का प्रयास करना और बिना उसे पूरा किये पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखना।
9. शांति का मतलब है क्षमा-शीलता। घृणा के उत्तर में घृणा नहीं करना है यही इसका सार हैं। क्योंकि घृणा से तो घृणा कभी मिटती ही नहीं। क्षमा शीलता से ही घृणा का मर्दन होता है।
10. सत्य का मतलब है मृषावादी न होना। आदमी को कभी झूठ नहीं बोलना चाहिए। उसे सत्य और केवल सत्य ही बोलना चाहिए।
11. अधिष्ठान का मतलब है अपने उद्देश्य तक पहुंचने का दृढ़ निश्चय।
12. करुणा का मतलब है सभी मानवों के प्रति प्रेमभरी दया।
13. मैत्री का मतलब है कि सभी प्राणियों के प्रति भ्रातृ-भावना हो, मित्रों के प्रति ही नहीं, शत्रुओं के प्रति; आदमी के प्रति ही नहीं, सभी विश्वशेष प्राणियों के प्रति।
14. उपेक्षा का मतलब है अनासक्ति, यह दूसरों के सुख-दुख के प्रति निरपेक्ष-भाव रखने से सर्वथा भिन्न वस्तु हैं। यह चित्त की वह अवस्था हैं जिसमें प्रिय-अप्रिय कुछ नहीं हैं। फल कुछ भी हो- उसकी ओर से निरपेक्ष रहकर साधना में रत रहना।
15. इन सद्गुणों का आदमी को अपनी पूरी समर्थ भरा प्रयास करना होता है इसलिए उन्हें परमिता कहा गया है।
6) धम्मचक्र प्रवर्तन
1. अपने धम्म का उपदेश देकर और उसकी सम्यक व्याख्या करके बुद्ध ने परिव्राजकों से प्रश्न किया :-
2. क्या आदमी के चरित्र की पवित्रता ही संसार की भलाई की आधारशिला नहीं हैं? उनका उत्तर था- हां यह ऐसा ही हैं।
3. और फिर हम बुद्ध ने पूछा क्या ईर्षा, राग, अज्ञान, हिंसा, चोरी, व्यभिचार और असत्य चरित्र की पवित्रता की जड़ नहीं खोद देते? क्या व्यक्तिगत पवित्रता के लिए यह आवश्यक नहीं है कि आदमी में इतना चारित्रिक बल हो कि वह इस प्रकार की बुराइयों के वश में न आ सके? यदि किसी आदमी में व्यक्तिगत पवित्रता ही नहीं है तो वह जनकल्याण कैसे कर सकता हैं? उनका उत्तर था- हां, यह सही हैं।
4. और आदमी दूसरों को अपना गुलाम बनाना, दूसरों को अपने वश में रखना क्यों चाहते हैं? आदमी दूसरों के सुख-दु:ख की ओर से उदासीन क्यों है? क्या यह इसलिए नहीं है कि एक आदमी दूसरे के प्रति योग्य व्यवहार नहीं करता? उनका उत्तर था- हां यह ऐसा ही हैं।
5. तो क्या अष्टांग मार्ग का का अनुसरण सम्यक-दृष्टि, सम्यक संकल्प, सम्यक वाणी, सम्यक आजीविका, सम्यक कर्मान्त, सम्यक व्यायाम, सम्यक स्मृति, सम्यक समाधि-- संक्षेप में सद्धम्म के अनुसार जीवन यापन-- यदि प्रत्येक उस पथ पर चले उस सारी अमानवता का, उस सारे अन्याय का, जो एक आदमी दूसरे के प्रति करता हैं, अंत नहीं कर देगा? उनका उत्तर था- हां, यह ऐसा ही हैं।
6. अब शील या सद्गुणों का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा-- क्या अभावग्रस्तों का अभाव दूर करने के लिए, क्या द्ररिद्रों की दरिद्रता दूर करने के लिए और सामान्य जन-कल्याण करने के लिए दान आवश्यक नहीं हैं? क्या जहां कष्ट हैं, जहां द्ररिद्राता हैं, उधर ध्यान देकर उसे दूर करने के लिए करुणा की आवश्यकता नहीं हैं? क्या निस्वार्थ-भाव से काम करने के लिए निष्काम-भाव की आवश्यकता नहीं हैं? क्या व्यक्तिगत लाभ न होने पर भी सतत प्रयत्न में लगे रहने के लिए उपेक्षा की आवश्यकता नहीं हैं?
7. क्या आदमी से प्रेम करना आवश्यक नहीं हैं? उनका उत्तर था- हां

8. मैं एक कदम आगे बढ़ कर कहता हूं, प्रेम करना पर्याप्त नहीं हैं, जिस चीज की आवश्यकता हैं, वह मैत्री हैं। प्रेम की अपेक्षा इस का क्षेत्र व्यापक हैं। इसका मतलब है न केवल आदमियों के प्रति मैत्री बल्कि प्राणि-मात्र के प्रति मैत्री। यह आदमियों में ही सीमित नहीं हैं। क्या ऐसी मैत्री अपेक्षित नहीं हैं? इसके अतिरिक्त दूसरी कौन सी चीज है जो सभी आदमियों को वह सुख प्रदान कर सके जो सुख आदमी अपने लिए चाहता हैं, आदमी का चित्त पक्षपातरहित रहे, सभी के लिए खुला, सभी के लिए प्रेम और घृणा किसी से भी नहीं?
9. उन सब ने कहा, हां।
10. लेकिन इन सद्गुणों के आचरण के साथ प्रज्ञा जुड़ी रहनी चाहिए- निर्मल बुद्धि।
11. क्या प्रज्ञा आवश्यक नहीं है? परिव्राजक मौन रहे, उन्हें अपने प्रश्न का उत्तर देने के लिए मजबूर करने की दृष्टि से तथागत ने अपना कथन जारी रखा। उन्होंने कहा:- भला आदमी हम उसी को कहेंगे जो कोई बुरा काम न करें, बुरी बात न सोचे, बुरी तरीके से अपनी जीविका न कमाये और मुंह से कोई ऐसी बात भी न निकाले जिससे किसी की हानि हो अथवा किसी को कष्ट पहुंचे परिव्राजक बोले, हां, यह ऐसा ही हैं।
12. लेकिन क्या सत्कर्म भी एक अंधे के भांति किये जाने चाहिये? मैं कहता हूं कि नहीं। यह पर्याप्त नहीं हैं। यदि यह पर्याप्त होता तो हम एक छोटे बच्चे के बारे में कह सकते कि वह हमेशा भला ही भला है। क्योंकि अभी एक छोटा बच्चा यह भी नहीं जानता कि शरीर क्या होता है, वह लात चलाते रहने के अतिरिक्त और शरीर से कर ही क्या सकता है? वह अभी नहीं जानता की वाणी क्या है? वह चिल्लाने के अतिरिक्त और उसी से कोई बुरी बात यह क्या कर सकता है? वह यह भी नहीं जानता कि विचार क्या होता हैं? वह ज्यादा से ज्यादा प्रशांता के मारे किलकारी भर मार सकता हैं। वह यह नहीं जानता कि जीवन जीविकार्जन क्या होता हैं? वह अपनी मां की छाती से दूध पीने के अतिरिक्त और कुछ जानता ही नहीं।
13. इसलिए सद्गुणों का अनुसरण भी प्रज्ञा-पूर्वक होना चाहिए, अर्थात निर्मल बुद्धि के साथ।
14. एक और कारण भी है जिसकी वजह से प्रज्ञा पारमिता इतनी अधिक महत्वपूर्ण और इतनी अधिक आवश्यक है। दान तो होना ही चाहिए। किंतु बिना प्रज्ञा के दान का भी दुष्परिणाम हो सकता है। करुणा तो होनी ही चाहिए। किंतु बिना प्रज्ञा के करुणा भी बुराई की समर्थक बन जाती हैं। सभी दूसरी बार पारमितायें प्रज्ञा-पारमिता की कसौटी पर खरी उतरने चाहिए। निर्मल बुद्धि का ही दूसरा नाम प्रज्ञा पारमिता है।
15. मेरी स्थापना है कि आदमी को अकुशल-कर्म का ज्ञान होना चाहिए, अकुशल-कर्म की उत्पत्ति किस प्रकार होती है; इसी तरह उसे कुशल-कर्म का भी ज्ञान होना चाहिए, कुशल-कर्म की उत्पत्ति कैसे होती हैं? इसी प्रकार आदमी को कुशल-कर्म और अकुशल-कर्म का भेद भी स्पष्ट ज्ञात होना चाहिए। इस प्रकार के ज्ञान के बिना चाहे कर्म-विशेष अपने में शुभ-कर्म ही क्यों न हो, तब भी यथार्थ कुशल-भाव या यथार्थ शुभ-भाव नहीं ही है। इसलिए मैं कहता हूं कि प्रज्ञा एक आवश्यक सद्गुण हैं।
16. तब बुद्ध ने परिव्राजकों को इस प्रकार की प्रेरणा देते हुए अपना प्रवचन समाप्त किया :-
17. हो सकता है कि तुम मेरे धम्म को निराशावादी धम्म समझ बैठों, क्योंकि मैं आदमियों का ध्यान मानव-जाति के दुःख की ओर आकर्षित करता हूं। मेरे धम्म के बारे में ऐसी धारणा बनाना गलती होगी।
18. निसंदेह मेरा धम्म दुःख के अस्तित्व को स्वीकार करता हैं, किंतु यह उतना ही जोर उस दुःख के दूर करने पर भी देता है।
19. मेरे धम्म में दोनों बातें हैं-- इस में मानव जीवन का उद्देश्य भी निहित है और यह अपने में आशा का संदेश भी हैं।
20. इसका उद्देश्य है अविद्या का नाश, जिसका मतलब है दुःख के अस्तित्व के संबंध में अज्ञान का नाश।
21. यह आशा का संदेश भी है क्योंकि यह दुःख के नाश का मार्ग बताता है।
22. क्या तुम इस सब से सहमत हो या नहीं? परिव्राजकों का उत्तर था- हां।
7) परिव्राजकों की धम्म-दीक्षा
1. उन पांच परिव्राजकों ने यह तुरंत देख लिया कि यह वास्तव में एक नया धम्म हैं। जीवन की समस्या के प्रति इस नए दृष्टिकोण से वे इतने अधिक प्रभावित हुए कि सभी एक साथ कहने लगे 'संसार के इतिहास में इससे पहले किसी भी धर्म के संस्थापक ने कभी भी यह शिक्षा नहीं दी कि दुनिया के दुःख की स्वीकृति ही धम्म का वास्तविक आधार है।
2. संसार के इतिहास में इससे पहले कभी किसी धम्म के संस्थापक ने यह शिक्षा नहीं दी की दुनिया के इस दुःख को दूर करना ही धम्म का वास्तविक उद्देश्य हैं।
3. संसार के इतिहास में इससे पहले किसी ने भी कभी मुक्ति का ऐसा मार्ग नहीं सुझाया था जो इतना सरल हो, जो मिथ्या विश्वास और 'अपौरुषेय' शक्तियों की मध्यस्थता से इतना मुक्त हो, जो इतना स्वतंत्र ही नहीं बल्कि जो किसी 'आत्मा' या 'परमात्मा' के विश्वास का इतना विरोधी हो और जो मोक्ष लाभ के लिए मरणान्तर किसी जीवन में विश्वास रखना या न रखना भी अनिवार्य न मानता हो।
4. संसार के इतिहास में इससे पहले किसी ने भी कभी ऐसे धम्म की स्थापना नहीं की, जिसका 'इलहाम' या 'ईश्वर-वचन' से किसी भी तरह का कुछ भी संबंध न हो और जिसके 'अनुशासन' आदमी की सामाजिक आवश्यकताओं के अध्ययन के परिणाम हों और जो किसी 'ईश्वर' की आज्ञायें न हों।
5. संसार के इतिहास में इससे पहले किसी ने भी कभी 'मोक्ष' का यह अर्थ नहीं किया कि वह एक ऐसा 'सुख' है जिसे आदमी धम्मानुसार जीवन व्यतीत करने से, अपने ही प्रयत्न द्वारा यहीं इसी पृथ्वी पर प्राप्त कर सकता हैं।
6. उन परिव्राजकों ने जब भगवान बुद्ध से उनके द्वारा उपदिष्ट याए सद्धम्म सुना तो इसी प्रकार अपनी भावनाओं की अभिव्यक्ति की।
7. उन्हें लगा कि बुद्ध के रूप में उन्हें ऐसा जीवन-सुधारक मिल गये हैं, जिनका रोम-रोम धम्म की भावना से ओत-प्रोत है, और जो अपने युग के बौद्धिक ज्ञान से सुपरिचित है, जिन में ऐसी मौलिकता है और साहस हैं कि वे विरोधी विचारों की जानकारी रखने के बावजूद मुक्ति के एक ऐसे मार्ग का प्रतिपादन कर सकें, जिस मुक्ति को यही, इसी जीवन में आत्म-साधना और आत्म-संयम द्वारा प्राप्त किया जा सकता है।
8. बुद्धि के लिए उनके मन में ऐसी असीम श्रद्धा उत्पन्न हुई कि उन्होंने उनके प्रति तुरंत आत्म-समर्पण कर दिया और प्रार्थना की कि बुद्ध उन्हें अपना शिष्य बना लें।
9. बुद्ध ने उन्हें 'एहि भिक्खवे' (भिक्षुओं, आओ) कहकर भिक्षु संघ में दीक्षित कर दिया। वे पंचवर्गीय भिक्षु नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए।
