Dhamma and Dharma 1) मज़हब (धर्म) क्या है?
1.'मजहब' एक अनिश्चित शब्द है, जिसका कोई स्थिर अर्थ नहीं।2. यह शब्द तो एक है, किंतु उसके अर्थ अनेक हैं।
3. इसका कारण है कि 'मज़हब' बहुत सी अवस्थाओं में से होकर गुजरा हैं। हर अवस्था में हम उस मान्यता विशेष को 'मजहब' ही कहते रहे हैं। निसंदेह हर एक समय कि मान्यता अपने से पूर्व के मान्यताओं से विभिन्न रही हैं और अपने बाद में आने वाली मान्यताओं से भी मिल रही हैं।
4. 'मजहब' की कल्पना कभी स्थिर नहीं रही हैं।
5. यह हर समय बदलती गिर चली आई हैं।
6. एक समय था जब बिजली, वर्षा और बाढ़ की घटनाएं आदमी-आदमी की समझ से सर्वथा पर एक की बातें थी। इन पर सब पर काबू पाने के लिए जो भी कुछ टोना-टोटका किया जाता था, 'जादू' कहलाता था। उस समय 'मज़हब' और 'जादू' एक ही चीज के दो नाम थे।
7. तब 'मजहब' के विकास में दूसरा समय आया। इस समय 'मज़हब' का मतलब था-- आदमी के विश्वास, धार्मिक कर्म-काण्ड, रीति-रिवाज, प्रार्थनाएं और बलियों वाले यज्ञ।
8. लेकिन 'मज़हब' का यह रूप स्वरूप व्युत्पन्न हैं।
9. 'मज़हब' का केंद्र-बिंदु इस विश्वास पर निर्भर करता है कि कोई शक्ति विशेष हैं जिसके कारण ये सभी घटनाएं घटती हैं और जो आदमी-आदमी की समझ से परे की बातें थी। अब इस अवस्था को पहुंच कर 'जादू' का प्रभाव जाता रहा।
10. आरंभ में यह शक्ति 'शैतान' का ही रूप थी। किंतु बाद में यह माना जाने लगा कि यह 'शिव' रूप भी हो सकती हैं।
11. तरह-तरह के विश्वास, कर्म-काण्ड और यज्ञ शिव स्वरूप शक्ति को प्रसन्न करने के लिए और क्रोध रूप शक्ति को संतुष्ट रखने के लिए भी आवश्यक थे।
12. आगे चलकर वही शक्ति 'ईश्वर' 'परमात्मा' या दुनिया का बनाने वाला कहलाई।
13. तब 'मज़हब' की मान्यता ने तीसरी शक्ल ग्रहण की, जब यह माना जाने लगा कि इस एक ही शक्ति ने 'आदमी' और 'दुनिया' दोनों को पैदा किया है।
14. इसके बाद मज़हब की मान्यता में एक यह बात भी शामिल हो गई कि हर आदमी की देह में एक 'आत्मा' हैं, वह 'आत्मा' नित्य है और आदमी जो कुछ भी भला-बुरा काम करता है, उस 'आत्मा' को 'ईश्वर' के प्रति उसके लिए उत्तरदायी रहना पड़ता हैं।
15. यही थोड़े में 'मज़हब' की मान्यता के विकास का इतिहास हैं।
16. अब 'मजहब' का यही अर्थ हो गया है और अब 'मज़हब' से यही भावार्थ ग्रहण किया जाता है-- ईश्वर में विश्वास, आत्मा में विश्वास, ईश्वर की पूजा, आत्मा का सुधार, प्रार्थना आदि करके ईश्वर को प्रसन्न रखना।
2) धर्म कैसे भिन्न है?
1. भगवान बुद्ध जिसे 'धम्म' कहते हैं वह 'मज़हब' से सर्वथा भिन्न हैं।
2. यूं जिसे भगवान बुद्ध धम्म कहते हैं, वह उसके समानान्तर है जिसे यूरोप के देववादी 'रिलीजन' कहते हैं।
3. लेकिन दोनों में कोई खास 'समानता' नहीं हैं। बल्कि दोनों में बहुत बड़ा अंतर हैं।
4. इसीलिए कुछ यूरोपीय देव-वादी भगवान बुद्ध के 'धम्म' को 'मज़हब' स्वीकार करने से इनकार करते हैं।
5. हमें इस के लिए कोई अफसोस नहीं हैं। नुकसान उन्हीं का हैं। इससे बुद्ध-धम्म की कोई हानि नहीं। बल्कि इससे 'रिलीजन' की कमियां स्पष्ट रूप से ध्यान में आ जाती हैं।
6. इस विवाद में पड़ने की अपेक्षा यह अच्छा है कि हम बतायें कि धम्म क्या हैं और फिर यह दिखाएं कि यह 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' से कैसे भिन्न हैं?
7. कहा जाता है कि 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' व्यक्तिगत चीज हैं और आदमी को इसे अपने तक ही सीमित रखना चाहिए। इसे सार्वजनिक जीवन में बिल्कुल दखल नहीं देना चाहिए।
8. इसके सर्वथा विरुद्ध 'धम्म' एक सामाजिक वस्तु हैं। यह प्रधान रूप से और आवश्यक रूप से सामाजिक हैं।
9. धम्म का मतलब है सदाचरण, जिसका मतलब है जीवन के सभी क्षेत्रों में एक आदमी का दूसरे आदमी के प्रति अच्छा व्यवहार।
10. इससे स्पष्ट है कि यदि कहीं एक आदमी अकेला ही हो तो उसे किसी 'धम्म' की आवश्यकता नहीं।
11. लेकिन यदि कहीं परस्पर संबंधित दो आदमी भी एक साथ रहते हो, तो चाहे वे चाहें और न चाहे उन्हें 'धम्म' के लिए जगह बनानी होगी। दोनों में से कोई एक भी बचकर नहीं जा सकता।
12. दूसरे शब्दों में बिना 'धम्म' के समाज का काम चल ही नहीं सकता।
13. समाज को तीन बातों में से एक का चुनाव करना ही पड़ेगा।
14. समाज चाहे तो अपने 'अनुशासन' के लिए 'धम्म' का चुनाव नहीं कर सकता। यदि धम्म 'अनुशासन' नहीं करता तो वह 'धम्म' ही नहीं हैं।
15. इसका मतलब है कि समाज 'अराजकता' के पथ पर आगे बढ़ना ठीक समझता हैं।
16. दूसरे समाज पुलिस को अर्थात ड़िक्टेटर को 'अनुशासन' के लिए चुन सकता हैं।
17. तीसरे समाज 'धम्म' और 'मजिस्ट्रेट' दोनों का चुनाव कर सकता हैं; जितने अंश में समाज 'धम्म' का पालन करें उतने अंश में 'धम्म' और जहां 'धम्म' का पालन न करे, वहां मजिस्ट्रेट।
18. न आराजकता में स्वतंत्रता और न ड़िक्टेटर-राज्य में स्वतंत्रता हैं।
19. केवल तीसरी व्यवस्था में ही स्वतंत्रता जीवित रहता हैं।
20. इसीलिए जो स्वतंत्रता चाहते हैं उनके लिए 'धम्म' अनिवार्य है
21. 'धम्म' क्या है? 'धम्म' की अनिवार्य आवश्यकता क्यों हैं? भगवान बुद्ध के अनुसार धम्म के दो प्रधान तत्व है- प्रज्ञा और तथा करुणा।
22. प्रज्ञा क्या है? प्रज्ञा किस लिए? प्रज्ञा का मतलब है बुद्धि (निर्मल बुद्धि)। भगवान बुद्ध ने प्रज्ञा को अपने धम्म के दो स्तंभों में से एक माना है। क्योंकि वह नहीं चाहते थे कि 'मिथ्या-विश्वासों' के लिए कहीं कोई गुंजाइश बची रहे।
23. करुणा क्या है? और करुणा किस लिए? करुणा का मतलब हैं (दया) प्रेम, (मैत्री) इसके बिना न समाज जीवित रह सकता हैं और न समाज की उत्पत्ति हो सकती है-- इसीलिए भगवान बुद्ध ने करुणा को अपने धम्म का दूसरा स्थान बनाया।
24. भगवान बुद्ध ने के 'धम्म' की यही परिभाषा हैं।
25. मज़हब (धर्म) या 'रिलीजन' की परिभाषा से यह कितनी भिन्न हैं?
26. कितनी प्राचीन और कितनी आधुनिक है यह भगवान बुद्ध द्वारा दी गई 'धम्म' की परिभाषा।
27. कितनी अलौकिक और कितनी मौलिक।
28. किसी से उधार नहीं ले गई। कितनी सच्ची।
29. 'प्रज्ञा' और 'करुणा' का एक अलौकिक सम्मिश्रण ही तथागत का 'धम्म' हैं।
30. 'मज़हब' अथवा 'रिवीजन' और 'धम्म' में इतना अंतर हैं।
3. 'मज़हब' (धर्म) का उद्देश्य और 'धम्म' का उद्देश्य
1. 'मज़हब' या 'रिलिजन' का उद्देश्य क्या हैं? धर्म का उद्देश्य क्या हैं? क्या वे दोनों एक ही समान है और एक ही हैं? अथवा वे दोनों दो हैं और भिन्न-भिन्न हैं?
2. इन प्रश्नों का उत्तर दो सुक्तों में है, एक जिसमें भगवान बुद्ध और सुनक्खत की बातचीत का उल्लेख है,-- और दूसरा जिसमें भगवान बुद्ध और पोट्ठपाद ब्राह्मण की बातचीत का वर्णन हैं।
3. तथागत एक बार मल्लों के नगर अनुपिय में विहार कर रहे थे।
4. उस समय पूर्वाह्न में तथागत ने चीवर पहना तथा पात्र और चीवर ग्रहण किया और अनुपिय नगर में भिक्षाटन के लिए निकले।
5. रास्तें में उन्हें लगा कि कदाचित भिक्षाटन के लिए अभी थोड़ी देर रुकना चाहिए। इसलिए वह भग्गव परिव्राजक के आश्रम में चले गये।
6. उन्हें आता देखकर भग्गव परिव्राजक उठ खड़ा हुआ। अभिवादन किया और बोला- आप कृपय आश्रम ग्रहण करें। आपके लिए आसन सज्जित हैं।
7. तब तथागत वहां विराजमान हुए। भग्गव परिव्राजक भी एक नीचा आसन लेकर पास ही बैठ गया। इस प्रकार बैठकर भग्गव परिव्राजक ने भगवान बुद्ध को कहा।
8. कुछ दिन हुए, काफी दिन हुए, श्रमण गौतम! सुनक्खत लिच्छवी मेरे पास आया था। कहता था कि अब मैं श्रमण गौतम का शिष्यत्व त्याग दिया हैं। क्या जैसा उसने कहा, वैसा ठीक हैं?
9. भग्गव! यह ऐसा ही है जैसे सुनक्खत लिच्छवी ने कहा।
1. भगवान बुद्ध जिसे 'धम्म' कहते हैं वह 'मज़हब' से सर्वथा भिन्न हैं।
2. यूं जिसे भगवान बुद्ध धम्म कहते हैं, वह उसके समानान्तर है जिसे यूरोप के देववादी 'रिलीजन' कहते हैं।

10. इसके आगे तथागत बोले- कुछ दिन हुए, काफी दिन हुए, हे श्रमण गौतम! सुनक्खत लिच्छवी मेरे पास आया था। अब मैं तथागत के शिष्यत्व त्याग करता हूं। अब मैं तथागत का शिष्य नहीं रहूंगा। जब उसने मुझे यह कहा, तब मैंने उससे पूछा- सुनक्खत! क्या मैंने तुझे कभी कहा था कि, सुनक्खत! तू आ और मेरा शिष्य बनकर मेरे पास रह?
11. भगवान! नहीं, ऐसा आपने कभी नहीं कहा।
12. अथवा तू ने ही मुझे कभी कहा था कि में तथागत को अपना 'गुरु' स्वीकार करता हूं।
13. भगवान! नहीं। ऐसा मैंने कभी नहीं कहां।
14. तब मैंने उससे पूछा जब न मैंने ही तुझे कहां और न तूने ही मुझे कहां तो क्या मैं हूं और क्या तू हैं, जो तू त्यागने की बात कर रहा है? मुर्ख कहीं के, क्या इसमें तेरा अपना दोष नहीं हैं?
15. सुनक्खत बोला-- लेकिन भगवान! आप मुझे सामान्य मनुष्यों को शक्ति से परे कोई प्रातिहार्य (चमत्कार) नहीं दिखातें।
16. सुनक्खत! क्या मैंने कभी तुझे कहां था कि सुनक्खत तू आकर मेरे मेरा शिष्य बन जा, मैं तुझे सामान्य मनुष्यों की शक्ति से परे कोई प्रातिहार्य दिखाऊंगा?
17. भगवान! ऐसा आपने कभी नहीं कहां।
18. अथवा सुनक्खत! तू ने ही मुझे कभी कहा था कि मैं भगवान का 'शिष्यत्व' स्वीकार करता हूं, क्योंकि भगवान मुझे सामान्य आदमियों की शक्ति से परे कोई 'प्रातिहार्य' दिखायेंगे?
19.भगवान! नहीं। मैंने ऐसा नहीं कहा था।
20. जब न मैंने ही तुझे कहां और न तूने ही मुझे कहां तो क्या मैं हूं और क्या तू है, जो तू त्यागने की बात कर रहा है? सुनक्खत! तू क्या सोचता है, चाहे सामान्य मनुष्यों की शक्ति से परे चमत्कार दिखाये जायें और चाहे न दिखाये जाये, क्या मेरे धम्म का यही उद्देश्य नहीं है कि जो मेरे धर्म के अनुसार आचरण करेगा, वह अपने दुःख का नाश कर सकेगा?
21. भगवान! चाहे प्रातिहार्य दिखाएं जाये और चाहे न दिखाई जाये निश्चय से तथागत की धम्म-देशना का यही उद्देश्य है कि जो कोई भी तथागत के धम्म के अनुसार आचरण करेगा, वह अपने दुःख का नाश कर सकेगा।
22. सुनक्खत! जब धम्म के उद्देश्य की दृष्टि से इसका कोई महत्व ही नहीं कि कोई प्रातिहार्य दिखाई जाए अथवा न दिखाई जाए, तो तेरे लिए ही प्रातिहार्य-प्रदर्शन का क्या मूल्य हैं? हे मूर्ख! अब तू देख कि इसमें तेरा अपना ही कितना कसूर हैं।
23. लेकिन भगवान! आप मुझे सृष्टि के आरंभ का भी पता नहीं देते?
24. अच्छा तो सुनक्खत! मैंने तुझे कब कहा था कि आ सुनक्खय, तू मेरा शिष्य बन जा, मैं तुझे सृष्टि के आरंभ का पता बताऊंगा।
25. भगवान! आपने नहीं कहा था।
26. अथवा तूने ही मुझे कभी कहा था कि मैं आपका शिष्य बनूंगा क्योंकि आप मुझे सृष्टि के आरंभ का पता देंगे?
27. भगवान! मैंने नहीं कहा था।
28. जब न मैने ही तुझे कहा और न तूने ही मुझे कहा तो क्या तो मैं हूं और क्या तू है, जो तू त्यागने की बात कर रहा है? सुनक्खत! तू क्या सोचता है चाहे मैं सृष्टि के आरंभ का पता बताऊ और चाहे न बताऊ, क्या मेरे धम्म का यही उद्देश्य नहीं है कि जो मेरे धम्म के अनुसार आचरण करेगा, वह अपने दुःख का नाश कर सकेगा?
29. भगवान! चाहे आप सृष्टि के आरंभ का पता बतायें और चाहे न बतायें, निश्चय से तथागत की धम्म-देशना का यही उद्देश्य है कि कोई भी तथागत के धम्म के अनुसार आचरण करेगा, वह अपने दुःख का नाश कर सकेगा।
30. सुनक्खत! जब धम्म के उद्देश की दृष्टि से इसका कोई महत्व ही नहीं कि चाहे सृष्टि के आरंभ का पता बताया जाए और चाहे न बताया जाए, तो तेरे लिए ही इसका क्या मूल्य हैं कि सृष्टि के आरंभ का पता बताया जाए?
31. इससे वह प्रकट होता है कि 'मज़हब' (धर्म) या 'रिलीजन' को तो सृष्टि के आरंभ से सरोकार है, 'धम्म' का एकदम नहीं।
(2) 'मज़हब' अथवा 'रिलीजन' धम्म से जो दूसरे फर्क हैं वे उस चर्चा से स्पष्ट हो जाते हैं जो भगवान बुद्ध और पोट्ठपाद के बीच हुई थी।
1. एक समय भगवान बुद्ध अनाथपिण्ड़क के जेतवनाराम में ठहरे हुए थे। उस समय पोट्ठपाद परिव्राजक मल्लिका के महाप्रसादा में ठहरा हुआ था। उसका उद्देश्य दार्शनिक चर्चा करना था।
2. उसके साथ बहुत से अनुयायी परिव्राजक थे-- कोई तीन सौ। भगवान बुद्ध और पोट्ठपाद के बीच बातचीत हुई। पोट्ठपाद ने पूछा-
3. भगवान! यदि ऐसा ही है, तो कम से कम, मुझे इतना तो बता दें कि क्या यही मत ठीक है कि 'संसार अनन्त हैं' और शेष मत मृषा हैं?
4. तथागत बोले- पोट्ठपाद! मैंने यह कब कहा है कि यही मत ठीक है कि 'संसार अनन्त है' और सब मत मृषा हैं? मैंने इस विषय में कभी अपना मत व्यक्त नहीं किया हैं।
5. तब, इसी तरह से पोट्ठपाद ने इस सभी प्रश्नों को क्रमशः पूछा-
क) क्या संसार अनन्त नहीं हैं?
ख) क्या संसार ससीम हैं?
ग) क्या संसार असीम हैं?
घ) क्या आत्मा और शरीर एक ही हैं
ड़) क्या आत्मा और शरीर भिन्न भिन्न हैं?
च) क्या तथागत मरणानन्तर रहते हैं?
छ) क्या तथागत मरणानन्तर नहीं रहते हैं?
जो) क्या वे रहते भी है और नहीं भी रहते हैं?
6. और इस प्रकार के हर प्रश्न का तथागत ने एक ही उत्तर दिया।
7. पोट्ठपाद! इस विषय में भी मैंने अपना मत कभी व्यक्त नहीं किया।
8. लेकिन तथागत ने इस विषयों में अपना मत क्यों नहीं व्यक्त किया।
9. क्योंकि इन प्रश्नों का उत्तर देने से किसी को कुछ लाभ नहीं, इनका धम्म से कुछ भी संबंध नहीं, इनसे आदमी को अपना आचरण सुधारने में कुछ भी सहायता नहीं मिलती, इसमें विराग नहीं बढ़ता, इन से राग-द्वेष से मुक्ति-लाभ नहीं होता, इनसे शक्ति नही मिलती इनसे समर्थ लाभ नहीं होता इनसे विद्या प्राप्त नहीं होती, इनसे प्रज्ञा लाभ नहीं होता और न ये निर्वाण की ओर अग्रसर करते हैं। इसलिए मैंने इन विषयों पर अपना कोई मत व्यक्त नहीं किया हैं।
10. तो तथागत ने किन विषयों का व्याख्यान किया हैं?
11. मैंने बताया हैं कि दुःख क्या है? मैंने बताया है कि दुःख का समुदय (मूल कारण) क्या है? मैंने बताया है कि दुःख निरोध क्या है? मैंने बताया है कि दुःख के निरोध (अन्त) का मार्ग क्या है?
12. और तथागत ने इन विषयों पर व्याख्यान क्यों दिया हैं?
13. क्योंकि पोट्ठपाद! इनमें लोगों को लाभ है, इनका धम्म से संबंध है, इनसे आदमी को अपना आचरण सुधारने में सहायता मिलती है, इनसे विराग बढ़ता है, इनसे राग-द्वेष से मुक्ति मिलती है, इन से शांति मिलती है, इन से शमथ होता है, इनसे विद्या प्राप्त होती है, इनसे प्रज्ञा लाभ होता है, और ये निर्वाण की ओर अग्रसर करते हैं। इसीलिए पोट्ठपाद! मैंने इन विषयों का व्याख्यान किया हैं।
14. इस संवाद से यह स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि 'मजहब' और 'रिलीजन' के लिए कौन से प्रश्न विचारणीय हैं, और 'धम्म' के लिए कौन से प्रश्न विचारणीय हैं। दोनों का जमीन आसमान का अन्तर हैं।
15. 'धम्म' का उद्देश्य है संसार का पुननिर्माण करना।
4) मज़हब (धर्म) और नैतिकता
1. 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' में नैतिकता का स्थान क्या हैं?
2. सच्ची बात तो यही है कि नैतिकता का 'मज़हब' 'रिलीजन' में कोई स्थान ही नहीं।
3. 'मज़हब' (धर्म) 'रिलीजन' के अंतर्गत आते हैं 'ईश्वर', 'आत्मा', 'प्रार्थनायें', 'पूजा', 'कर्म-काण्ड़', 'रीति-रिवाज', 'यज्ञ', 'बलि', 'कर्म'।
4. नैतिकता का संबंध वही आता है जहां एक आदमी का संबंध दूसरे से आरंभ होता है।
5. 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' में तो 'नैतिकता' बाहर से आने वाले हवा के झोंके की तरह है, ताकि व्यवस्था और शांति की स्थापना में उपयोगी सिद्ध हो।
6. 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' एक त्रिकोण हैं।
7. अपने पड़ोसी के साथ अच्छा व्यवहार करो क्योंकि तुम दोनों एक ही पिता परमात्मा के पुत्र हो।
8. यही 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' का तर्क है।
9. प्रत्येक 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' नैतिकता का उपदेश देता है, किंतु नैतिकता का 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' का मूलाधार नहीं हैं।
10. यह एक रेल के उस डिब्बे की तरह है जो यूं ही साथ जोड़ दिया गया है। यथावसर साथ भी दिया जाता है; और पृथक भी कर दिया जाता है।
11. इसलिए 'मज़हब' 'रिलीजन' की क्रिया-परिपाटी में नैतिकता का स्थान आकस्मिक है और कभी-कभी उसका भी प्रयोजन रहता है।
12. इसलिए 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' में नैतिकता प्रभावोत्पादक नहीं है।
5) धर्म और नैतिकता
1. धम्म में नैतिकता का स्थान क्या है?
2. सीधा सरल उत्तर है कि नैतिकता ही धम्म है और धम्म ही नैतिकता हैं।
3. दूसरे शब्दों में यदि धम्म में 'ईश्वर. के लिए कहीं कुछ स्थान नहीं हैं तो भी धम्म में 'नैतिकता' का वही स्थान है जो 'मज़हब' या 'रिलीजन' में 'ईश्वर' का।
4. धम्म में प्रार्थनाओं के लिए, तीर्थ-यात्राओं के लिए, कर्म-काण्ड़ो के लिए, रीति-रिवाजों के लिए तथा बलि-कर्मों के लिए कोई जगह नहीं।
5. नैतिकता ही धम्म का सार है। नैतिकता नहीं, तो धम्म भी नहीं।
6. धम्म में जो नैतिकता है उसका सीधा मूल-स्रोत आदमी को आदमी से मैत्री करने की जो आवश्यकता है, वही हैं।
7. इसमें ईश्वर की मंजूरी की आवश्यकता नहीं। ईश्वर को प्रसन्न करने के लिए आदमी को नैतिक बनाने की आवश्यकता नहीं। अपने भले के लिए ही आदमी के लिए यह आवश्यक है कि वह आदमी से मैत्री करें।
6) केवल सदाचार भी पर्याप्त नहीं है, यह पवित्र और व्यापक होनी चाहिए
1. कोई भी चीज या बात कब पवित्र बनती है? क्यों पवित्र बनती हैं?
2. हर मानव-समाज में- चाहे वह आदिम अवस्था में हो और चाहे वह उन्नत अवस्था में हो-- कुछ चीजें या विश्वास है ऐसे होते हैं जो 'पवित्र' माने जाते हैं और कुछ चीजें या विश्वास ऐसे होते हैं जो 'पवित्र' नहीं माने जाते।
3. जब कोई चीज या विश्वास 'पवित्रता' की सीमा में प्रवेश कर गया, इसका मतलब है कि उसके विरुद्ध आचरण नहीं किया जा सकता। ठीक बात तो यह है कि उसे स्पर्श ही नहीं किया जा सकता। ऐसा करना सर्वथा निषिद्ध दी हो जाता है।
4. इससे भिन्न जो चीज या बात 'पवित्र' नहीं मानी जाती, उसके विरुद्ध आचरण किया जा सकता है, अर्थात आदमी बिना किसी भय के अथवा आत्म-प्रताड़ना के उस विषय में जैसा चाहे कर सकता है।
5. 'पवित्र' का मतलब है 'धार्मिकता' लिए हुए। इस प्रकार की चीज या बात के विरुद्ध जाने का मतलब है 'मज़हब' या मर्यादा का उल्लंघन करना।
6. किसी भी चीज को 'पवित्र' क्यों बनाया जाता है? अपने प्रश्न को विषय के भीतर रखने के लिए, पूछा जा सकता है कि नैतिकता को 'पवित्र' क्यों बनाया गया।
7. नैतिकता के पवित्र बनाए जाने में, लगता है कि तीन बातों का प्रभाव पड़ा हैं।
8. पहली बात तो यह है कि जो श्रेष्ठ है, सामाजिक हित की दृष्टि से उसे सुरक्षित रखना चाहिए।
9. इस प्रश्न की पृष्ठ-भूमि का संबंध है उस बात से जिसे हम 'जीवन-संघर्ष' और उसमें 'योग्यतम' का जीवित बने रहना' कहते हैं।
10. यह प्रश्न 'विकास-वाद के सिद्धांत' से संबंधित हैं। सब कोई जानता हैं कि मानव-समाज में जो भी विकास हुआ हैं वह 'जीवन-संघर्ष' के कारण हुआ हैं, क्योंकि आरंभिक युग में भोजन-सामग्री बड़ी सीमित मात्रा में प्राप्त थी।
11. भयानक संघर्ष रहा हैं। प्रकृति के पंजे और दांत रक्त-रंजित रहे हैं।
12. ऐसे जीवन-संघर्ष में जो भयानक और रक्त-रंजित होता है केवल 'योग्यतम' ही बचा रहता हैं।
13. समाज की मूल अवस्था ऐसी ही रही हैं।
14. बहुत प्राचीन काल में किसी न किसी ने यह प्रश्न अवश्य उठाया होगा कि क्या योग्यतम (सबसे अधिक शक्ति संपन्न) ही श्रेष्ठतम भी माना जाना चाहिए? क्या जो निर्बलतम है, उसे भी संरक्षण देकर यदि बचाया जाए तो क्या यह आगे चलकर समाज के हित की दृष्टि से अच्छा सिद्ध न होगा?
15. लगता है कि उस समय में समाज की जो स्थिति थी, उस समय उसने एक स्वीकारात्मक उत्तर अवश्य दिया होगा।
16. तब प्रश्न पैदा होता है कि कमजोरी के संरक्षण का क्या उपाय हैं?
17. जो योग्यतम (सबसे अधिक शक्तिशाली) हो उस पर कुछ प्रतिबंध लगाने कम और किसी भी तरह काम चल ही नहीं सकता था।
18. इसी स्थिति में नैतिकता का मूल्य और आवश्यकता छुपी हुई हैं।
19. इस नैतिकता के लिए 'पवित्र' बनाया जाना आवश्यक था, क्योंकि पहले पहले ये पाबंदियां (प्रतिबंध) योग्यतम (सर्वाधिक शक्तिशाली) व्यक्तियों पर ही लगाई गई थी।
20. इसके बड़े गंभीर परिणाम हो सकते थे।
21. पहला प्रश्न तो यही पैदा होता है कि नैतिकता जब सामाजिक रूप करती है, तब कहीं यह असामाजिक (सामाजिक हितों की विरोधिनी) तो नहीं हो जाती हैं?
22. ऐसा नहीं है कि चोरों में अपनी कुछ 'नैतिकता' ही न हो व्यापारियों में भी नैतिकता होती ही हैं। एक जाति वालों में भीतरी नैतिकता रहती ही हैं और डाकुओं के झुण्ड में भी अपनी नैतिकता रहती ही हैं।
23. लेकिन यह नैतिकता पार्थक्य की भावना लिए हुए है, इस नैतिकता में दूसरों के बहिष्कार की भावना निहित हैं। यह नैतिकता दल-विशेष के स्वार्थी का संरक्षण करने के लिए है। इसीलिए यह नैतिकता समाज-हित-विरोधिनी हैं।
24. यह इस प्रकार की नैतिकता की पार्क्स और अपने में ही सीमित रहने की भावना ही है, जिससे इसकी समाज-हित-विरोधिनी प्रवृत्ति को क्रियाशील होने का अवसर मिलता हैं।
25. यही बात उस समय लागू होती है जब कोई भी एक दल अपने स्वार्थों की रक्षा करने के लिए नैतिकता का आश्रय लेता हैं।
26. समाज के इस दल-बंदी का असर बड़ी दूर तक पहुंचता हैं।
27. यदि समाज में इस प्रकार के असामाजिक दल बने रहेंगे, तो समाज हमेशा असंगठित रहेगा और टुकड़े-टुकड़े रहेगा
28. एक असंगठित और टुकड़े-टुकड़े समाज का सबसे बड़ा खतरा यही हैं कि यह कई तरह के जीवन-मापों और आदर्शों को जन्म दे देता हैं।
29. जब तक लोगों के जीवन के माप-दण्ड़ समान न हों और जब तक लोगों के जीवन-आदर्श समान न हों तब तक समाज परस्पर मिल-जुलकर रहने वाला समाज बन ही नहीं सकता।
30. जब इतने तरह के जीवन के माप-दण्ड़ रहेंगे और इतनी तरह के जीवन आदर्श रहेंगे तो व्यक्ति के लिए मन का अविरोधी-भाव बनाए रखना असंभव हैं।
31. बुद्धिपूर्वक विचार करने से किसी की जनसंख्या आदि की दृष्टि से जो और जितना जिसका अधिकार होना चाहिए व न होकर यदि किसी समाज के एक हिस्से की किसी दूसरे हिस्से पर अनुचित प्रधानता बनी रहेगी तो इसका अवश्यंभावी परिणाम परस्पर का कलह होगा।
32. कलह को रोकने का एक ही उपाय है कि सभी के लिए नैतिकता के समान नियमों और सभी उन्हें पवित्र माने।
33. एक तीसरा कारण भी हैं जिसके कारण नैतिकता पवित्र मानी जानी चाहिए और इसको सर्वमान्य होना चाहिए; व्यक्ति की उन्नति के संरक्षण के हित में।
34. जहां 'जीवन-संघर्ष' है अथवा जहां वर्ग-विशेष का शासन है, वहां व्यक्ति के हित सुरक्षित नहीं हैं।
35. दलबन्दी व्यक्ति को चित्त की वह अविरोधी-भावना प्राप्त करने ही नहीं देती जो तभी संभव है जब समाज में समान 'जीवनआदर्श' हो। व्यक्ति के विचार बहक जाते हैं और वह एकता देखी नहीं सकता।
36. दूसरे दल बंदी ही में पक्षपात रहता है और न्याय की आशा नहीं रहती।
37. दलबंदी में वर्ग जड़ीभूत हो जाते हैं मालिक हमेशा मालिक बने रहते हैं, गुलाम हमेशा गुलाम बने रहते हैं। मालिक हमेशा मालिक बने रहते हैं, मजदूर हमेशा मजदूर बने रहते हैं। विशिष्ट अधिकारी हमेशा विशिष्ट अधिकारी ही रहते हैं और गुलाम हमेशा गुलाम ही रहते हैं।
38. इसका मतलब है कि कुछ लोगों के लिए तो स्वतंत्रता हो सकती है, किंतु सभी के लिए नहीं। इसका मतलब हुआ कि चंद लोगों के लिए समानता हो सकती है, किंतु अधिकांश के लिए नहीं हो सकती।
39. इसका इलाज क्या हैं? एक ही इलाज है की भ्रातृ-भावना को सर्वमान्य और प्रभावशाली बनाया जाए।
40. भ्रातृ-भाव क्या है? आदमी हर आदमी को अपना भाई समझे... यही नैतिकता हैं।
41. इसलिए भगवान बुद्ध ने कहा कि धम्म में नैतिकता हैं और जिस प्रकार धम्म पवित्र हैं; उसी प्रकार नैतिकता भी पवित्र हैं।
